FIRST EDITION of the principal source of information on the life and work of the engineer, mineralogist and geologist William Smith, later dubbed “the father of English geology” by Adam Sedgwick. Phillips was his nephew, ward, pupil and assistant, and a distinguished geologist in his own right. His biography was printed in an edition of 500 copies, and there was only one edition until modern reprints appeared.
