JAMESON, Robert.

Manual of Mineralogy: containing an account of simple minerals, and also a description and arrangement of mountain rocks.

Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable & Co… .1821

8vo, 4 leaves, pp. liv, 501 [a misprint for 491], 2 leaves (Constable’s advertisements). Original boards, neatly rebacked, uncut, old library label on front pastedown. Text slightly browned in places, otherwise a very good copy.

FIRST EDITION of Jameson’s last book, based on Mohs’s Die Charaktere der…naturhistorischen Mineralsystems (1820, published in English in the same year). It contains a long section entitled “Description and Arrangement of Mountain Rocks”; this includes some of the material found in his Elements of Geognosy (1808), which contained the first detailed account in English of Werner’s geognostic theories and his classification of the rock strata.
