8vo, pp. viii, 80, 1 plate printed in red, + 24 (publisher’s advertisements dated April 1880). Original brown cloth, uncut, upper corners bumped and affected by damp, stitching slightly loose. Half-title and last page lightly browned, pale dampstain on plate. Pencilled initials on front endpaper, and some pencilled underlining in the text.
FIRST EDITION. G&M 4562. “In his Diagnosis of Diseases of the Spinal Cord (1880), he illustrated from a dissection with Horsley for the first time the relationship of the spinal segments to the vertebral bodies, and demonstrated the dorsal spinocerebellar tract (Gowers’ tract). In this work he introduced the terms myotatic and knee-jerk, which he elicited with the rubber edge of his stethoscope or a ‘percussion hammer’ ” (McHenry, p. 315).
